Hair loss does not wait for the school year, and this box is for the adult in the house rather than for the children whose term it is. It pairs a licensed medicine that works on the scalp with a daily dietary supplement taken by mouth. The two are not interchangeable, and only one of them is restricted to men aged 18 to 65, so read the limits below before anything is opened.

What is in the box

• Regaine for Men Extra Strength Scalp Solution 5% w/v Minoxidil, Cutaneous Solution, 60 ml — a licensed medicine for hereditary hair loss (male-pattern baldness) in men aged 18 to 65 only. Its minoxidil 5% w/v, in ethanol and propylene glycol, is applied to a dry scalp, where it slows the loss and regrows hair.
• American Creations Pro Hair PLUS, Advanced Formula for Hair, Skin and Nails, 60 tablets — an oral dietary supplement with a 28-ingredient formula, keratin and silica called out on the pack front, supplying nutrients used in building hair, skin and nails.

How to use it

• The scalp solution — applied to a dry scalp. Follow the enclosed leaflet for how much and how often; no quantity is printed here.
• The tablets — taken daily with food, following the dosing panel on the bottle and not exceeding it.

Good to know

The two items work in different places: the solution on the scalp, the tablets from the inside. Increased shedding two to six weeks after starting the minoxidil is expected and usually settles within a couple of weeks. If it continues for more than two weeks, stop using it and see a doctor. Allow at least 2 months before judging the result, and understand that regrowth is lost if treatment stops. One 60 ml bottle is about a month at the labelled dose, so it does not cover that period on its own and the next bottle should be bought in good time. The tablets are the only item here that a woman can use. They are a supplement rather than a treatment for hair loss.
