Janumet combines Sitagliptin and Metformin HCl to effectively manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Sitagliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, functions by inhibiting the breakdown of 'incretin' hormones, stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin in response to elevated blood glucose levels.
Importantly, Sitagliptin doesn't impact insulin production when blood glucose is low. Additionally, it decreases glucose production by the liver by elevating insulin levels and reducing the hormone glucagon.
Conversely, Metformin, classified as a biguanide, contributes to an anti-hyperglycemic effect by lowering blood glucose levels, particularly after meals.

Points of interest:

• To minimize stomach upset, take these Janumet tablets with food or immediately after a meal.

• Inform your doctor if you encounter symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, or cramps.

• Metformin has a slow onset of action, and it may take up to two weeks to achieve control.



Side effects of Janumet tablet:

• Malabsorption of vitamin B12.

• Nausea and vomiting.

• Anorexia.

• Diarrhea.

• Headache.

• Joint pain.



Cautions:

• Metformin is excreted by the kidneys, so serum creatinine levels should be assessed before starting treatment and regularly thereafter.

• Decreased renal function in the elderly is common and often asymptomatic.

- Therefore, Metformin should be discontinued before or at the time of tests and not resumed until 48 hours afterward.

• Contraindicated in patients with heart failure.

• Contraindicated in patients with pancreatitis.



Interactions of Janumet tablet:

• ACE inhibitors: The hypoglycemic effect of metformin may be enhanced when used with ACE inhibitors.

• Beta-blockers: Warning signs of hypoglycemia (such as tremors) with metformin may be masked when used with beta-blockers.

• Cimetidine: Cimetidine may reduce the excretion of metformin.

• Furosemide: May reduce the effectiveness of sitagliptin and other diabetic medications.

• Levothyroxine: May reduce the effectiveness of sitagliptin.
