Points of Interest:
• Lasix may cause dizziness, get up from lying or sitting position gradually to avoid dizziness on standing.
• Monitoring of sodium, potassium and creatinine is recommended.
Side effects of lasix tablets:
• Electrolyte disturbances (e.g. hyponatremia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesaemia, hypocalcaemia).
• Hyperuricemia, increased creatinine concentration, dehydration, metabolic alkalosis, gout.
• Dizziness, orthostatic hypotension, fainting.
Cautions:
• People with renal failure.
• Can exacerbate diabetes and gout.
• Patients with partial obstruction of urinary flow have increased risk of developing acute retention.
• If lasix given in large amounts, this can lead to intense diuresis, which could lead to fluid and electrolytes depletion.
Interactions of Lasix:
• Phenytoin: the effect of furosemide antagonized by phenytoin.
• Digoxin: increased risk of digoxin toxicity may occur due to hypokalemia caused by furosemide.
• Sotalol: increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia when given with furosemide due to hypokalemia.
Indications:
Lasix 40 mg 20 Tablets used for:
• Diuretics for edema
• Resistant hypertension
• Chronic heart failure [water retention]
• Acute pulmonary edema
