Insulin Lantus contains insulin glargine.
Insulin glargine is a modified, long-acting insulin very similar to human insulin.
Insulin glargine is a long-acting insulin used to treat adults with type 2 diabetes and children (6 years of age and older) with type 1 diabetes to control high blood sugar.

Points of interest:

• Be aware of the signs of hypoglycemia (sweating, confusion, rapid heartbeat, blurred vision, shakiness, anxiety, headache, dizziness, weakness).

• Rotate injection sites to prevent damage to the tissue under the skin.

• Avoid re-use of the same injection.

• If you experience hypoglycemia, consume glucose or simple carbohydrate (e.g. candies, soft drinks, sugar, honey), once your blood glucose returns to normal, eat a snack or a meal.

• Insulin is usually injected under the skin; pinch the skin to reduce the chance of injecting a blood vessel.

• Switching between insulin brands should be done under strict medical supervision.



Side effects of Lantus 100 IU/3 mL 5 injection:

• Hypoglycemia.

• Weight gain.



Cautions:

• Time of occurrence of hypoglycemia depends on the action profile of the insulin used and may change when the treatment regimen is changed.

• Adjustment of dose may be necessary if patients undertake increased physical activity or change their usual meal plan.



Interactions of Lantus:

• Beta blockers: signs of hypoglycemia can be masked when beta blockers given with insulin.

• Lantus 100 IU/3 mL 5 injection used in the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
